Ontario Laboratories Information System Standard

Ontario Laboratories Information System Standard

A province-wide electronic system that can store and transmit lab requisitions and test results in digital form, the Ontario laboratories information system (OLIS) is fundamental for building a comprehensive electronic health record for Ontarians.

Hospitals, community labs and other health care providers with authority to access OLIS use the system to collect, share and transmit lab requisitions and results electronically.

This standard ensures all information technology systems that retrieve lab data from OLIS can exchange and understand the content through standardized HL7 messages and terminologies.

The OLIS standard was created by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care in consultation with experts from hospital, community, and public health laboratories, the Ontario Medical Association, vendors of laboratory information systems and electronic medical record systems, in addition to a range of other stakeholders.
