Provincial Client Registry – FHIR

The provincial client registry Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) specification is a next generation standards framework for exchanging health care information electronically. It leverages the latest web technology and can be used in a wide variety of contexts, including mobile devices, cloud communications, EHR-based data sharing, and server communications in large institutional health care providers.

This specification enables users to query Ontario’s provincial client registry. This means health care organizations can find all associated identifiers such as health card number(s) and hospital- issued medical record number(s) for a patient from different contributing sources as well as all matching records for a patient.

Learn about the other standards that work with the PCR – the pan-Canadian PCR using HL7 versions 2 and 3.

Status

FHIR is an evolving trial-for-use standard, so additional changes to it by HL7 are expected. We will continue to monitor developments and assess whether or not there are impacts, and publish updates as they evolve.
