eReferral Standard

Electronic information connectivity within a patient’s circle of care is a fundamental driver for clinicians adopting information technology in health care today. The eReferral provincial reference model was designed as a resource for provincial eReferral solution planning and development activities, and assists decision-makers in maximizing short- and long-term health information technology investments.

This model consists of business, technology, privacy and security solutions as well as information frameworks, the draft incorporates an overview of Ontario’s eReferral interoperability standard.

Exchanging information for referral purposes is recognized as one of the most important processes in the relationship among health care providers. The eReferral standard will be updated based on the eConsult initiative which enables physicians to engage in a secured, electronic dialogue with specialists to manage patient care, without the need for face-to-face visit.
